![]() Dunn grafted vaudeville vernacular onto a cool classicism, a prose style at once effortless and extravagant. In championing weirdness over “the horror of normalcy,” the novel became scripture to readers on the margins of the mainstream, attracting such high-profile admirers as Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. It has sold more than 475,000 copies in the United States alone. The epic saga of the Binewskis, a family of circus freaks, and the tragic fate of their traveling sideshow, Geek Love was a finalist for the National Book Award and has since inspired cultish devotion (just Google “ Geek Love tattoos”). For Katherine Dunn, Geek Love (1989) is that novel. ![]() ![]() ![]() Like one jagged peak in a range of well-proportioned hills, the novel towers over the author’s other books and holds them in shadow. S ome novels grow so popular that they overwhelm a writer’s career. ![]() ![]() To learn more about how and for what purposes Amazon uses personal information (such as Amazon Store order history), please visit our Privacy Notice. ![]() You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie Preferences, as described in the Cookie Notice. These fiercely compassionate women inspired each other to right the wrongs of the turbulent era in which they lived. ![]() For the next thirteen years, Hick had her own room at the White House, next door to the First Lady. Her admiration drew the buttoned-up Eleanor out of her shell, and the two quickly fell in love. Hick, as she was known, had grown up poor in rural South Dakota and worked as a servant girl after she escaped an abusive home, eventually becoming one of the most respected reporters at the AP. Eleanor had been raised in one of the nation's most powerful political families and was introduced to society as a debutante before marrying her distant cousin, Franklin. Over the next thirty years, until Eleanor's death, the two women carried on an extraordinary relationship: They were, at different points, lovers, confidantes, professional advisors, and caring friends. ![]() A lifeline came to her in the form of a feisty campaign reporter for the Associated Press: Lorena Hickok. I finished Dark Rise last night with an upset tummy, a tremor in my hands, and my heart in my throat. Oh did I mention the main character is bisexual? HERE FOR IT. I can already tell things are about to get really, really interesting. ![]() And then the last 50 pages and the ending happened and so I'm left screaming and panicking and already NEED the next book. However, while the beginning started off extremely strong, the middle half of the book kind of dragged a bit and I was looking at a 3 star read. We got a super slow burn romance, enemies to lovers, villain origin stories, characters reborn and reimagined, and basic YA tropes (chosen ones, best friend, warrior, love interest, etc.) all subverted and flipped on their heads. This is exactly the type of book I can see blowing up on BookTok (TikTok). ![]() ![]() I would shelve this as ' light fantasy', so newcomers are welcome and anyone looking for less high strung intricate fantasy.
