I could tell Zapata was setting up the romance factor. ![]() I LOVE slow burns, but the lack of romantic tension in the story led me to question if this was actually a romance book more than once-and no, that is NOT a good sign. Kind of like if people tried to push Rey and Kylo Ren together… Oh wait, THEY ALREADY HAVE. It’s a little like the equivalent of pushing two characters together when they act much more like siblings or very close friends. And I know what you’re thinking “slow burn” but there’s a difference between slow burn, and leaving the romantic tension out a book until the last 200 pages or so. It felt like a book about figure skating that also ended up with a 5 minute romance thrown in at the end. ![]() I think there’s a lot of things that this book is, but a romance book? I would probably say not. This felt like a look at the kind of dedication it takes to be great at something. ![]() ![]() They begin by disturbing the crime scene, borrowing the dead man’s car, and appropriating the food and liquor in his kitchen that will dertainly go bad if left for any forensic techs who might one day show up. The local police don’t seem interested, so the caper aspect of the novel begins when Bruce and his friends start trying to find out what really happened. A man is killed during the story, purportedly by falling tree limbs, but bookstore owner Bruce Cable of Bay Books doesn’t think so. The novel is easy to read but the most exciting part of the caper is provided by the hurricane, and this is where we find the book’s most effective writing. ![]() In her blurb, author Delia Owens ( Where the Crawdads Sing) calls this second book in the series a “wild but smart caper.” ![]() Camino Winds brings back many of the characters from Camino Island, a novel the New York Times aptly decribed as “a delightfully lighthearted caper.” Camino Winds begins with wind, the monster hurricane Leo that takes aim at the Florida Island with deadly intentions and mind-numbing accuracy. ![]() ![]() ![]() George (touching the dinosaur) uses himself as a model. A family comes into the dinosaur exhibit to also see the dinosaurs. Suddenly, he is hungry because he has missed lunch. ![]() ![]() Then, he caught sight of a palm tree that had nut-like fruit growing on it (nuts possibly coconuts). The two dinosaurs are a mother Stegosaurus and a baby Stegosaurus. George inadvertently makes another mess in the science museum with a dinosaur exhibit (with life-sized model/ animatronic dinosaurs). He is chased by the farmer but eludes him by hiding in a shirt on a clothes line and then jumping into a pickup truck headed for the museum (which turns out to be a science museum). George makes a mess with ink and a fountain pen and tries to wash it away with the garden hose, but the room fills with water (flooding the room) and he rushes to a nearby farm to get a portable pump and get rid of the flood with it. ![]() The story was published only weeks before the Soviets launched Sputnik II and Rey wanted to share his interests in space travel with children.
